Chapter 12 - THE HOTEL RECEIPT

The flight reservation changed the question.
This was no longer just: Why did my wife lie about a pregnancy?
It was: What life had she planned after leaving mine?
Camila found the answer in the second phone’s email archive.
A hotel receipt from Austin. Two nights. One suite. Two guests.
Clara Vega Alvarez.
Brandon Hale.
I called him again.
He swore it was business.
“Two nights in one suite?” I asked.
“The reservation was made by Clara. I had my own room.”
“Then show me your receipt.”
He could not.
I cared about the attachments in the hotel email.
Draft quitclaim deed.
Draft management transfer.
Draft letter stating that, due to the emotional and medical demands of a high-risk pregnancy, I wished to delegate temporary authority over several accounts to my wife.
My signature appeared on all three.
The date was next week.
Not even tomorrow.
They had prepared future signatures.
Camila whispered, “They were building a paper version of you.”
That sentence stayed with me.
A husband who signed whatever Clara needed.
A father too distracted to notice.
A businessman too emotional to challenge transfers.
A man grieving a baby who never existed.
My phone buzzed with a text from an unknown number.
Mateo, don’t let Nico blame everything on me. I’ll tell you the truth. Alone.
Clara.
A second message arrived with a location.
A storage facility near the airport.
Camila read it and said, “Absolutely not alone.”
I agreed.
We called the detective handling the forgery report and drove there with an officer nearby.
Unit 314 was unlocked.
Clara was not inside.
But the storage unit was full.
Suitcases.
Boxes of designer clothes.
A second fake pregnancy belly.
And a large white folder labeled:
JANUARY PLAN.
