Chapter 8 - The Messages She Sent My Husband

Evan did not answer.
Mom called again.
Then again.
On the fourth call, he turned his phone facedown.
"She's been doing this for months," he said.
I looked at him. "Doing what?"
He hesitated.
That hesitation scared me.
"Evan."
He unlocked his phone and opened a message thread.
My mother's name was at the top.
There were dozens of texts.
Is Rachel sleeping enough?
She sounded overwhelmed today. Maybe you should insist she rest.
I felt heat crawl up my neck.
"Why didn't you show me these?"
"Because I answered twice, told her we were fine, and then mostly ignored them. I thought she was being annoying, not building a case file."
"She was checking my mental health through you."
"I know."
"She was trying to get you to agree with her."
"I know."
I scrolled farther.
One message stopped me.
If Rachel ever gets too overwhelmed, Lily can always stay with us. You know that, right?
I handed the phone back.
"I need air."
Evan followed with a blanket and wrapped it around my shoulders.
"I'm sorry."
"I know you didn't mean—"
"No. I'm sorry I treated this like normal mother-in-law stuff because it was easier than seeing the pattern."
I looked at him.
That mattered.
Not perfection.
Not excuses.
Recognition.
We went in together.
At 8:14 that night, Mom sent me a final message.
At 8:22, an email arrived from an attorney's office.
My hands went numb.
May you like
Evan read the first line over my shoulder.
Then he said, "Okay. Now we stop treating this like a family argument."
