Chapter 11 - The Letter Robert Left Behind

Abby opened the envelope with hands that weren't quite steady. Inside was a signed letter from Robert Bell, several pages of old notes, and a copy of Evie's trust summary.
The letter began: I told myself I was protecting the children by keeping this family together. I was wrong.
Robert described Abby's near-drowning. He had been the one to pull her out. Margaret had stood on the deck, telling him to wait because Abby needed to learn not to panic. Afterward she took credit for the rescue and used the incident to accuse him of being reckless. Robert admitted he let the lie stand.
"He knew," Daniel said, his voice cracking. "All those years, he knew."
"He was afraid of her," Abby said. "That didn't make it okay."
I read the last paragraph aloud. "If Margaret ever makes a child unsafe so she can be needed, stop her. I should have done it for Abby."
No one spoke for a long time.
Julia Chen agreed the letter supported a pattern, though it couldn't prove what happened to Evie's shirt. Then she noticed the trust summary attached to it.
"Why did your father include this?" she asked Daniel.
Evie was the beneficiary of a fund Robert established before his death. Margaret served as trustee, but Robert had required an independent review before Evie's eighth birthday. That birthday was less than a month away.
"Mom hates that audit," Daniel admitted. "She says Dad didn't trust her."
Julia pointed to a handwritten note in the margin.
If accounts don't balance, ask Abby where the original records are.
Abby looked up sharply. "I thought Dad was just being dramatic."
"Where are they?" I asked.

She slid a small brass key from the envelope.
"In a bank box he told me never to open unless someone needed proof."
