Chapter 13 - The Man Who Looked Away

"You signed away Evie's money?" I asked.

"I thought I was signing permission for an accountant to review records."

"Did you ask to see them?"

Daniel said nothing.

For the first time since the pool, I was angry at someone besides Margaret. Daniel had spent years avoiding conflict with his mother. Each time she criticized me, he called it a misunderstanding. Each time she demanded something, he called it easier to comply.

"You trained yourself not to see what she was doing," I said.

"I know."

"Then stop."

He took the transfer forms to Julia and gave a full statement about what he'd signed. He also provided emails showing Margaret had described them as tax paperwork. It wouldn't erase his mistake, but at least he was no longer hiding it.

At the hospital, Evie wanted to know why her father looked sad.

"Because I should have asked more questions," he told her.

"About Grandma?"

"Yes. And about what you needed."

Evie considered that. "You can ask now."

He held her so gently I had to look away.

Later, Detective Park called about the missing security footage. A network technician had confirmed the cameras hadn't failed because of bad weather. Someone with administrator access had turned off the pool feed from a phone.

"Margaret's phone?" I asked.

"We're tracing it."

Daniel was standing beside me. He went pale.

"Don't trace anything," he said quietly. "I already know."

I turned. "Daniel?"

He swallowed. "Mom asked me to shut the pool cameras off for a private family video. She said Evie would be embarrassed if people watched her swimming lesson."

I felt the ground move under me.

"I did it," my husband whispered. "I turned them off."
