Chapter 17 - You Can Go for a Swim Now, Dear

The audio started with water moving in the wind and a door creaking on its hinges. I heard Evie's sneakers tapping along the pool deck.

Then Margaret's voice, gentle and sweet:

"You can go for a swim now, dear."

"Are you sure?" Evie asked.

"Of course. The orange top will keep you up."

I closed my eyes. That sentence was the part that destroyed me. Evie had trusted her. She had been told, by someone who loved her, that the water was safe.

A splash followed. Then a small frightened voice: "Grandma? It's not working."

Silence, except for the water.

"Grandma!"

I reached for Daniel's hand without thinking. His fingers were ice cold.

Margaret spoke again, farther from the recorder. "Just a few more seconds."

Then Evie screamed.

I stopped the playback. "I can't."

"You don't have to hear the rest," Park said. "We have what we need."

Daniel shook his head. "I do."

The recording continued. A chair scraped. Margaret shouted something toward the side gate, possibly for Mason. Seconds later, my own voice tore through the recording, screaming Evie's name. Then came the crash of my body hitting the water.

Margaret's voice returned only after Evie was on the deck.

"Get rid of that shirt," she said.

Park explained that audio, video, witness statements, the recovered inserts, and phone records would be reviewed together. No single detail had to carry the entire case.

I thought of the way Margaret had checked her surroundings before touching the top. She hadn't wanted a swimming lesson. She'd wanted a story she could control.

"What happens now?" Daniel asked.

May you like

Park's expression was grim.

"We are asking prosecutors to act. And Margaret has just given us a new reason to investigate what happened to Abby years ago."
