Chapter 15 - The Price of Silence

"Don't answer her," I told Lena. "Send the messages to Detective Park."
Margaret had written three times. She offered money for Lena's mother's medical bills, a new apartment, and a glowing job reference. In return, she wanted Lena to say the orange top's inner lining had torn while she handled it after the rescue.
"She knows exactly what was wrong with that shirt," Lena said.
"And now there's proof she's trying to change your story."
Lena laughed once without humor. "I used to think the worst thing she could do was fire me."
Julia helped Lena find legal support and connected her with a local employment organization. I offered to pay for her mother's care, but Lena shook her head.
"I appreciate it. But I won't let this become another deal made over Evie's head. I need to make my own choices."
I respected her more for that.
By evening, the police had obtained Mason Reed's original texts. Margaret had written that she wanted the scene to show a vulnerable child, a distracted mother, and a grandmother who stepped in at the right moment. Mason had pushed back, saying a child should never be deliberately frightened in the water. Margaret assured him it was only a staged introduction and the girl would be safe.
He'd canceled the job at 3:12, after realizing she was asking him to wait out of sight while Evie entered the pool. His last message read: This isn't what I agreed to. Get her out of the water.
"He should have called somebody," Daniel said bitterly.
"He should have," I replied. "But he didn't take the panels out."
Park called just before midnight.
"We've asked the court for additional protection for Evie," he said. "Margaret has filed an emergency custody petition anyway."

"After all this?"
"She's not backing down. And she's bringing a witness you know."
