Chapter 14 - The Camera Margaret Forgot

Daniel didn't ask me to forgive him. That was the first good decision he'd made in days.
He gave Detective Park his phone and explained exactly when Margaret had called. He showed the text she'd sent: Camera privacy from three to three-thirty, please. Surprise for Nora.
"She used me," he said.
"Yes," Park answered. "And you still made a choice. Both things can be true."
Park's technicians checked the house again. The main pool cameras had gone dark, but an older maintenance camera watched the side entrance from a different system. It stored video locally, and Margaret hadn't known it existed. Caleb had installed it after tools began disappearing.
The angle didn't show the water. It did show the laundry counter through an open glass door.
Park invited Daniel and me to view a short section. Margaret appeared at 3:01 carrying the orange shirt. She checked the garden path and glanced toward the main camera. Then she laid the shirt on the counter and worked at its inside lining. Her hands were partly hidden, but the blue inserts were visible beside her for a moment.
I pressed my palm against my mouth.
At 3:09 she carried the top toward the pool. Evie followed, bouncing on her toes.
The recording had no clear view of the moment Evie entered the water. But it showed Margaret returning to the laundry door alone, minutes later, and pushing a small bundle deep into the trash.
"Is that enough?" I asked.
"It's significant," Park said. "And we're not finished."
Outside the station, Lena called me, close to tears.
"Mrs. Bell knows I talked," she said. "She says there's a way we can both come out of this okay."
May you like
"What way?"
"She offered to pay my debts if I tell police I damaged the shirt."
