Chapter 10 - Evelyn Vale

Evelyn was arrested at 8:42 p.m. in a private airfield lounge forty miles away.

She had two passports, ninety thousand dollars in cash, and a one-way charter reservation to Montreal.

When Tessa told me, I felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

Lily was asleep when I returned to the hospital.

I sat beside her and watched the monitors blink.

At three in the morning, she woke.

“Did you get him?”

“Yes.”

“Is he coming back?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“You can't promise that.”

She was right.

So I changed the promise.

“He won't come near you without going through courts, prosecutors, federal agents, and me. But most important, he won't get to decide what you do next.”

Her eyes filled.

“I don't know what I do next.”

“You don't have to know tonight.”

The next morning, Peter Sloan asked to see me.

He was thin, dehydrated, and missing three teeth. Richard had kept him hidden for years, moving him between properties whenever investigators got close.

“I should have come forward,” Sloan said.

“You were afraid.”

“I was paid to be afraid.”

He gave a weak laugh.

Then his face changed.

“Claire came to me.”

My heart stopped.

“When?”

“Four days before the crash.”

He told me Claire had found financial documents in a box I brought home from work by mistake. She recognized Charles Vale's name from a charity board.

“She asked me if Meridian was paying police officers,” Sloan said. “I told her yes.”

“What else?”

“I told her Charles Vale had been ordering surveillance on your family.”

My hands curled around the chair.

“She said she was going to tell me.”

“She was.”

Then Sloan looked toward the door.

“But Evelyn intercepted her first.”

He explained that Evelyn met Claire in a grocery-store parking lot and warned her to stop asking questions.

Claire refused.

Two days later, Evelyn hired a mechanic connected to Meridian.

“Did she order him to cut the brake line?”

Sloan shook his head.

“She ordered him to damage it enough to scare her.”

“That's what Richard said.”

“Richard doesn't know everything.”

I leaned forward.

Sloan's voice dropped.

“The mechanic called Evelyn after the crash. He said the line had been cut again after he left.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Again?”

May you like

Sloan nodded.

“Someone wanted Claire dead.”
