Chapter 5 - The Woman in the Hallway

Tessa left for the Vale estate with six agents.

I stayed with Lily because leaving her again would have repeated the oldest mistake of my life.

An hour later, a nurse entered.

“Mr. Hale? There's a woman asking for you. She says her name is Melissa Crane.”

I knew the name.

Everyone in town did.

Melissa was Richard's executive assistant.

She came into the room wearing a beige Easter dress with mud on the hem and fear all over her face.

Lily immediately sat straighter.

“Melissa?”

The woman locked the door behind her.

“I took it.”

“Took what?” I asked.

“The folder.”

She pulled a flash drive from her bra strap and placed it on the table.

“Richard told me to empty the safe before the federal team got inside. He thought I was loyal.”

“Are you?”

She laughed once, bitterly.

“I was loyal to my paycheck. Then I watched him drag Lily by the hair last Thursday.”

Lily's face collapsed.

Melissa covered her mouth.

“I'm sorry.”

“What is on the drive?” I asked.

“Copies of what I could scan. Contracts. Payoffs. Medical letters. Judge donations. Police payments. And a file called HALE.”

The old professional calm came back. I hated how familiar it felt.

Melissa continued.

“Richard has been preparing to declare Lily incompetent for months. He wanted control of her trust.”

Lily blinked.

“What trust?”

I turned toward her.

Claire's parents had left money in a protected account for Lily. She was supposed to receive full control at thirty.

She was twenty-nine.

I had assumed Richard knew nothing about it.

I was wrong.

Melissa opened her phone and showed us an email from Richard to a private psychiatrist.

Need diagnosis completed before May 1. Once guardianship is granted, transfer authority moves through spouse.

Lily's birthday was May 3.

“He married me for the trust?” she whispered.

Melissa shook her head.

“Not only that.”

She looked at me.

“He married her because of you.”

The room went quiet.

“What does that mean?”

Melissa swallowed.

“Richard's father believed you destroyed his family sixteen years ago.”

I felt the floor tilt.

“His father?”

“Charles Vale. He was a silent partner in Meridian Civic Partners.”

I remembered the name from buried financial reports.

Melissa reached for the flash drive.

“There is a video on here. Richard recorded it after he got drunk at the company Christmas party.”

“What does he say?”

May you like

She looked directly at Lily.

“He says your marriage was revenge.”
