Chapter 14 - Charles Wasn't the Only Vale

The recording began with Evelyn's voice.
You promised this would stay buried.
A man answered.
It will, if Richard stops digging through his father's files.
I listened twice.
The voice was younger than Charles Vale's.
Tessa ran it through archived interviews.
The match came back at ninety-three percent.
Thomas Vale.
Charles's younger brother.
A man who had supposedly died in Belize twelve years ago.
“Supposedly?” I asked.
Tessa handed me a death certificate.
No body recovered.
Private doctor.
Closed-casket memorial.
Thomas had been Meridian's financial architect—the person who built the shell companies that moved money to officials.
If he was alive, the old case had never truly ended.
Lily listened to the next recording.
Evelyn said, Richard is becoming reckless. He married the Hale girl and thinks revenge makes him his father.
Thomas answered, Let him. While Arthur watches the boy, nobody watches us.
My skin went cold.
Richard wasn't the mastermind. His obsession with my family had given Thomas cover.
Tessa opened recent bank records from the flash drive Melissa stole.
Payments had continued through the current year.
Construction permits.
Police pension funds.
Judicial consulting fees.
Campaign donations.
The corruption wasn't sixteen years old.
It was operating now.
Then Melissa called.
Her voice was panicked.
“Someone broke into my apartment.”
“Are you safe?” Tessa asked.
“I'm in the parking garage.”
“Stay in the car. Lock the doors.”
A crash sounded through the line.
Melissa screamed.
The call ended.
Federal agents reached the garage in seven minutes.
Her car was empty.
The driver's window was shattered.
Her phone lay on the pavement.
And on the hood, someone had placed a white Easter egg.
Inside it was a strip of paper.
Tessa read the message aloud.
ARTHUR HALE SHOULD HAVE STAYED RETIRED.
Lily grabbed my hand.
“Dad, this is because of us.”
“No.”
“Melissa helped me.”
“And the people who took her chose to do it.”
Tessa's phone rang.
She listened for five seconds, then looked at me.
“They found traffic-camera footage.”
“Of the abduction?”
“Yes.”
“Can we see the plate?”
“We don't need to.”
“Why?”
“Because the driver is someone you know.”

She turned the screen toward me.
Behind the wheel was Peter Sloan.
