Chapter 15 - The Witness Who Lied

Peter Sloan disappeared from the hospital at 12:06 a.m.
The guard outside his room had been drugged with crushed sleeping medication mixed into coffee.
Sloan's IV had been removed cleanly.
No struggle.
No panic.
He had walked out.
I replayed every conversation with him. Some of his fear had been real. Not all of it.
Tessa found the first crack in his identity.
His fingerprints didn't match the old federal booking file.
“Who did we rescue?” I asked.
“Someone who knew Sloan's history well enough to pass as him.”
Lily whispered, “Thomas.”
Tessa looked at her.
It fit.
Thomas Vale was the right age. Similar build. He had disappeared twelve years earlier. He knew every detail of Meridian because he created it.
He had let Richard keep him at the lodge because it gave him the perfect cover: helpless witness, abused prisoner, forgotten old man.
And we had carried him directly into federal medical protection.
“He used us,” I said.
Tessa's face hardened.
“Yes.”
But why kidnap Melissa?
We got the answer from Richard.
Federal prosecutors offered him no deal, only a chance to tell the truth before Thomas found a way to blame everything on him.
Richard sat behind glass in county detention.
“My uncle hated my father,” he said.
“You knew he was alive?”
“Not until last year.”
“What did he want from Melissa?”
“Access codes.”
“To what?”
Richard looked at me.
“The family archive.”
I almost laughed.
“Another safe?”
“Not a safe. A server.”
He explained that Vale Development kept an offline archive in an abandoned records facility outside town. Contracts, ledgers, backups, insurance files, old surveillance.
Thomas needed Melissa because she had administrative credentials.
“If he gets in?” Tessa asked.
“He deletes thirty years.”
“Where is the facility?”
Richard hesitated.
I leaned toward the glass.
“Melissa helped Lily when you wouldn't.”
His face tightened.
“Don't make this about morality.”
“It became about morality when you put your hands around my daughter's throat.”
For once, Richard had no answer.
He gave Tessa the address.
Federal teams were dispatched immediately.
Ten minutes later, an agent called from the location.
The building was empty.
The server racks were still running.
Melissa was nowhere.
On the main monitor, a countdown timer showed nineteen minutes remaining.
