Chapter 17 - The Last Mirror

Thomas hadn't come to destroy the archive.

He had come to steal it.

The deletion timer was bait.

By forcing us to unlock the emergency mirror, we gave him access to the only partition even Richard couldn't open.

“Kill every port,” the cyber agent shouted.

“Physical disconnect!”

Someone yanked network cables.

The transfer stopped at eighty-one percent.

Too late.

Thomas had most of the archive.

But not all.

The final nineteen percent contained the oldest records.

Claire's year.

Tessa found Thomas's hidden transmitter taped beneath a loading ramp. Its signal pointed toward the river.

A helicopter lifted within minutes.

No one found him that night.

But Melissa survived.

She had bruises, a cut above one eyebrow, and enough anger to power a city.

“He kept asking for the mirror password,” she told us. “I told him I didn't know it.”

“Did he say where he was going?”

“No. But he said something strange.”

“What?”

“He said, ‘Arthur will bring me the missing pages.’”

I didn't understand until the archive team called.

The untransferred nineteen percent included a scanned notebook recovered from Charles Vale's office after his death.

Page after page listed dates, payments, names.

One section was labeled C.H.

Claire Hale.

The notebook showed the original order to frighten her, the mechanic payment, and Charles's later decision to return to the parking garage.

Then one handwritten line:

A.H. HAS COPY B.

I stared at it.

“I don't have any copy.”

Lily looked at me.

“Maybe Mom did.”

We searched my house.

Closets. Attic boxes. Claire's old cookbooks. Photo albums.

At 4:20 a.m., Lily found a recipe card tucked inside Claire's Bible.

It wasn't a recipe.

It was a note.

Arthur—if anything happens to me, check Lily's music box. Don't trust anyone wearing a badge just because you know his name.

My hands shook.

Lily's childhood music box sat in a storage bin upstairs.

The tiny ballerina no longer turned.

I removed the felt lining.

Underneath was a microcassette.

Claire's handwriting marked the label:

COPY B.

We found an old recorder in the garage.

The tape hissed.

Then Claire's voice filled the room.

“Arthur, if you're hearing this, I was right to be afraid.”

Lily began crying.

Claire continued.

“I met Thomas Vale today.”

I looked at Tessa.

Thomas, not Charles.

Claire's voice dropped to a whisper.

“And he told me who inside the Marshals Service has been protecting Meridian.”
