Chapter 6 - The Marriage Was a Weapon

We watched the video with the blinds closed.
Richard sat in his private office, tie loose, face flushed from bourbon.
He was speaking to someone off camera.
You want to know the best part? Hale thanked me at the wedding. Shook my hand. Called me son.
A man's voice laughed.
Richard leaned closer to the camera.
My father died believing Arthur Hale ruined him. So I took the one thing Hale would never risk.
Lily.
Beside me, my daughter stopped breathing.
Richard continued.
She was easy. Kind people always are. You give them a sad story and they start doing the work for you.
Lily reached forward and paused the screen.
“I met him at a grief fundraiser.”
I remembered.
Richard had donated fifty thousand dollars to a foundation for families who lost loved ones to drunk drivers.
Claire's photograph had been on the wall.
He hadn't met Lily by chance.
He had walked into her grief carrying a script.
Lily covered her face.
“I told him everything.”
“That doesn't make this your fault.”
“He knew what to say because he studied us.”
Melissa nodded.
“His office kept a background file on both of you.”
I swallowed my anger.
“What else?”
She clicked into the folder marked HALE.
There were old surveillance photographs of me outside Lily's high school. Claire at a grocery store. Our former house. My government vehicle.
Then I saw one photo that made my skin go cold.
Claire standing beside her car three days before she died.
A red circle had been drawn around the rear brake assembly.
Underneath it, someone had typed:
PRESSURE LINE ACCESS CONFIRMED.
Lily looked at me.
“Dad?”
I couldn't answer.
For sixteen years, I had believed Claire died because a drunk driver ran a red light.
That part was true.
But the original crash report noted something I had forgotten: Claire had entered the intersection too fast and failed to brake.
We blamed panic.
What if there had been no brakes?
Tessa called before I could finish the thought.
“Arthur, the safe was mostly empty. We found burn residue in the fireplace and a shredded document bag.”
“Melissa has copies.”
“Good. Because Richard is gone.”
My head snapped up.
“What?”
“He left through the service road before the perimeter closed.”
“Where would he go?”
Melissa whispered the answer before Tessa could.
“His father's hunting lodge.”
Then Lily's hospital door opened.

Chief Nolan walked in alone.
And locked it behind him.
