Chapter 13 - RICHARD'S APOLOGY

Adrian's father came to see me alone.

Richard Cole looked ten years older than he had at my birthday.

"I owe you an apology."

"Yes."

He blinked.

People expected forgiveness to begin by making the guilty comfortable.

I was done with that.

"I should have stopped him."

"Yes."

"I was afraid it would make things worse."

"It got worse anyway."

He nodded.

Then he handed Marcus a folder.

Bank statements.

Barbara's personal accounts.

Transfers from BJC Lifestyle Consulting into a brokerage account Adrian controlled.

More than two hundred thousand dollars had circled back to him.

"I found these at home," Richard said.

"Why bring them?"

His eyes filled.

"Because Barbara told me last night that if Adrian goes down, we all go down together."

He looked exhausted.

"I don't want to go down with a lie."

That sentence stayed with me.

Richard admitted Barbara had pushed Adrian for years to secure more of my trust assets.

She believed marriage entitled him to half of everything I had.

Our prenup said otherwise.

Adrian had signed it willingly.

Separate inherited assets remained separate.

Family trust assets remained separate.

Any attempt to fraudulently transfer or encumber those assets triggered fee-shifting and indemnity protections.

He had mocked the document as "rich-family paranoia."

Now it mattered.

Richard looked at me.

"Is he going to lose everything?"

"No."

He seemed surprised.

"He will keep what is legally his."

I leaned back.

"The problem is that he spent eleven years pretending things were his when they weren't."

Richard closed his eyes.

Before he left, he said one more thing.

"Barbara has a key to the lake house."

My lake house.

A Bennett trust property.

"Why does that matter?"

"Because Adrian stored documents there."

"What documents?"

May you like

Richard looked at Marcus.

"The originals."
