Chapter 2 - THE WINE

The night had started with Cabernet.

I was crossing the ballroom when Vanessa Hart stepped directly into my path.

Her shoulder hit mine.

Wine spilled down the front of her gold dress.

She gasped loudly enough to stop three nearby conversations.

"You did that on purpose."

"No," I said. "You walked into me."

Her eyes filled with instant tears.

"Adrian!"

My husband appeared almost immediately.

He did not ask what happened.

He looked at Vanessa's dress, then at me.

"What did you do?"

"She threw wine on me," Vanessa whispered.

I almost laughed.

Six weeks earlier, I had discovered hotel receipts in Adrian's desk.

Three weeks later, I found photographs.

Two days before my birthday, his driver accidentally forwarded me a schedule showing a private suite at the Bellmont Hotel for Adrian and Vanessa the following weekend.

I said nothing.

Silence is not always surrender.

Sometimes it is preparation.

"Apologize," Adrian ordered.

"For an accident?"

"For humiliating my guest."

His guest.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at him.

"No."

A few guests turned away.

Adrian moved closer.

"You're embarrassing me."

"No, Adrian. You're doing that perfectly well yourself."

Someone gasped.

His face changed.

That was the moment control became more important to him than dignity.

He grabbed my wrist.

"Take her upstairs."

Two security men hesitated.

"Sir?"

"You heard me."

I pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

Adrian smiled.

"No. I think tonight my wife learns who gave her this life."

That sentence told me everything.

He believed the mansion was his.

The cars were his.

The company was his.

Even my dignity belonged to him.

He had forgotten who financed the first twelve million dollars that saved his failing consulting firm eleven years earlier.

My grandmother.

My trust.

May you like

My family's money.

And he had no idea that I had spent the previous six weeks putting every document in order.
