Chapter 5 - THE FIRST PHONE CALL

The police separated everyone.

Ethan checked my shoulders, wrists, breathing, and pupils.

"Hospital," he said.

"Later."

"Evelyn."

"I need five minutes."

He knew that tone.

He gave me five.

I asked an officer for my phone.

Adrian watched from across the ballroom.

"Who are you calling?"

I unlocked the screen.

"Serena Walsh."

His face changed.

Serena was my lead corporate attorney.

Adrian knew her name because he had complained for years that she was "too protective" of me.

He had never understood that was her job.

She answered on the second ring.

"Evelyn?"

"Activate the emergency governance protocol."

Silence.

Then: "Are you safe?"

"Police are here."

"Good. Confirm Level Three?"

I looked directly at Adrian.

"Level Three."

He laughed.

"What does that even mean?"

I ignored him.

Serena began reading actions back to me.

Suspend Adrian Cole's signing authority at Bennett-Cole Advisory.

Freeze corporate cards issued under my family trust guarantee.

Suspend access to trust-backed credit facilities.

Notify the board that a key-person misconduct event had occurred.

Lock all equity transfers pending review.

Preserve company email, cloud storage, and building access logs.

Adrian stopped laughing.

"You can't do that."

I covered the phone.

"Actually, I can."

"That's my company."

"Forty-two percent of the voting shares sit in the Bennett Family Trust. Another eighteen percent are held by a holding company I control."

His face went white.

For eleven years, Adrian had told everyone he built Bennett-Cole from nothing.

He had built the brand.

I had built the capital structure that kept it alive.

Serena continued.

"One more thing. The vesting schedule on Adrian's founder units stops automatically if the board finds gross misconduct connected to violence, fraud, or material breach of fiduciary duty."

Adrian stared at me.

"What founder units?"

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

He had signed the agreement eight years earlier without reading the schedules.

And tonight, fifty witnesses had just watched him trigger it.
