Chapter 19 - VANESSA'S LETTER

Vanessa wrote me six months later.
Not an email.
A letter.
I almost threw it away.
Instead, I read it once.
Evelyn,
I don't expect forgiveness. I knew he was married. I enjoyed feeling chosen over you. I told myself your marriage was already dead because that made what I was doing easier to live with.
At your birthday, I thought he was going to scare you. Then I watched him keep going.
I realized I had spent a year admiring a man whose power depended on everyone around him being afraid.
I am sorry I helped him build the room where he hurt you.
Vanessa.
I folded the letter.
I did not answer.
An apology could be sincere without creating a relationship.
Barbara never wrote.
Richard did.
He divorced her after thirty-eight years.
His letter was shorter.
I spent too long confusing keeping peace with being good. I am sorry.
I answered that one.
Thank you for finally speaking.
Adrian moved into a rented condo after the mansion occupancy order ended.
He kept his vested equity settlement after lawful offsets and obligations.
He did not leave with nothing.
He left with far less than he had spent years telling people belonged to him.
There is a difference.
Bennett Advisory recovered the blocked transfer and much of the improper vendor money through settlements and legal proceedings.
Harrow replaced three executives after its internal investigation.
Grant accepted the consequences of his cooperation agreement.
The rest belonged to courts, regulators, and time.
I stopped following every update.
Healing required eventually refusing to make Adrian the main character of my life.
On my thirty-sixth birthday, my brothers asked what kind of party I wanted.
"Small."
Gabriel said, "Define small."
"Six people."
Marcus counted on his fingers.
"There are six of us already."
May you like
"Exactly."
For the first time in years, family did not feel like an audience.
