Chapter 15 - BARBARA TALKS

Barbara was not arrested at the hotel that day.
Investigators questioned her after she left.
By evening, she had a lawyer.
By morning, she wanted a deal.
Adrian had stopped taking her calls.
Grant had blamed her for the consulting invoices.
Vanessa had turned over her messages.
The family loyalty Barbara preached for years lasted less than forty-eight hours under pressure.
Her attorney arranged a proffer.
I was not in the room.
Marcus summarized it later.
Barbara admitted she knew about the incapacity strategy.
She admitted helping Adrian collect examples of what they called my "emotional volatility."
She admitted paying a private investigator to follow me to therapy appointments.
She admitted BJC Lifestyle Consulting performed almost no legitimate work.
But she denied knowing about forged medical records.
She denied knowing Adrian would hit me.
I believed the second part.
Not because it excused her.
Because when he started striking me, Barbara's face in the videos changed after the first few blows.
She had wanted me humiliated.
She had not expected Adrian to reveal what he really was.
Marcus asked if I wanted to hear the worst part.
"Always a dangerous question."
He handed me a transcript.
Barbara had described the birthday plan in one sentence:
"Vanessa was supposed to provoke Evelyn, Adrian was supposed to make her lose control, and the guests were supposed to remember it."
The entire party had been staged around me.
My birthday.
My house.
My money.
My humiliation.
I read the line again.
Then I laughed.
Marcus looked concerned.
"You okay?"
"For years Barbara told me I never contributed enough to this family."
I pushed the transcript back.
"Turns out I paid for the production too."
Then he gave me the next update.
May you like
Grant Ellis had surrendered.
And he was ready to explain who at Harrow Capital had financed the scheme.
