Chapter 12 - Olivia SpeaksFor the first time, Olivia asked to speak to Detective Harris alone.

Ethan left the room.

That was harder than he expected.

He had spent days wanting to protect her.

Now protection meant not hovering.

An hour later, she came out.

Eyes red.

Back straight.

“What did you tell him?”

“Everything.”

There was more.

Diane had slapped her once.

Not hard enough to bruise.

Hard enough to scare her.

It happened after Olivia told Courtney to stop using the credit card.

Diane said:

“Don’t embarrass your sister over money.”

Olivia said she would tell Ethan.

Diane replied:

“He’ll think you’re hormonal.”

That sentence kept Olivia silent for weeks.

Ethan sat down.

“I’m sorry.”

Olivia looked at him.

“For what?”

“For building a life where you thought I wouldn’t believe you.”

“You didn’t build that alone.”

“No.”

She was right.

Her family had trained her to keep peace.

He had rewarded silence by not asking deeper questions.

Different responsibilities.

Both real.

Then Olivia said:

“I need something from you.”

“Anything.”

“Stop making decisions without me because you’re scared.”

He blinked.

She continued.

“The hotel. The lawyer calls. The bank. You’re doing good things. But you’re still deciding.”

He looked down.

She was right again.

He had replaced Diane’s control with protective control.

Kinder.

Still control.

“What do you want?”

“I want to go home.”

“The house is cleared now.”

“I know.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

So they went.

The first night back, Olivia stood in the kitchen.

The same sink.

The same counter.

Then she opened the cabinet and tore down the chore schedule.

She ripped it in half.

Then again.

Then again.

Ethan watched.

She did not cry.

She threw it in the trash.

A minute later, the doorbell rang.

A process server stood outside.

Diane had filed for grandparent visitation.

The baby had not even been born.
