Chapter 6 - The Hospital LobbyDiane stood in the lobby wearing a cream coat and carrying a leather folder.

She looked like a concerned mother.
That was her talent.
Ethan walked toward her with Rachel on speaker.
Diane smiled.
“I’m glad you finally came down.”
“Give me the folder.”
“No.”
“Then leave.”
“She is my daughter.”
“And she revoked your authority twenty minutes ago.”
Diane’s smile disappeared.
“What?”
Rachel’s voice came through Ethan’s phone.
“Mrs. Miller, any power of attorney you claim is now formally revoked. The bank, hospital, and relevant institutions have been notified.”
Diane stared.
“You had no right.”
Rachel almost laughed.
“Olivia had every right.”
Then Diane changed tactics.
“She signed it.”
“No, I didn’t.”
Olivia’s voice came from behind Ethan.
A nurse had wheeled her to the edge of the lobby.
Ethan turned.
“You should be upstairs.”
“I wanted to say it myself.”
Olivia looked at her mother.
“I did not sign that.”
Diane’s face tightened.
“You don’t remember half the things you sign.”
There.
The cruelty slipped out.
Olivia flinched.
Ethan stepped between them.
“Leave.”
Diane looked around at the security guards.
Then at Olivia.
“You really want your mother thrown out of a hospital?”
Olivia’s voice shook.
“Yes.”
Diane went pale.
Olivia continued.
“You threw away my medicine.”
“I was helping you.”
“You made me clean until my legs shook.”
“You needed activity.”
“You took my money.”
Diane’s face changed again.
“I borrowed it.”
“Without asking.”
“You would have said yes.”
Olivia began crying.
“No, Mom. I wouldn’t.”
That sentence seemed to stun Diane more than anything.
Because Olivia had always said yes.
Then Diane leaned closer.
“You’re making a terrible mistake.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“No.”
He lowered his voice.
“She made the mistake when she believed you were allowed to hurt her because you’re family.”
Security escorted Diane out.
Then Olivia whispered:
“Ethan.”
“What?”
“My grandmother’s jewelry.”
He looked at her.
“What about it?”
“It was in the bedroom safe.”
Ethan opened the security app.
