Chapter 19 - The SistersVanessa moved to Austin.

Courtney got her own apartment.

Madison returned to school.

For the first time, none of them lived under Diane’s roof or money.

They did not suddenly become close sisters.

That would have been fake.

Vanessa had spent Olivia’s money.

Courtney had mocked her.

Madison had laughed while she cleaned.

Apologies did not erase that.

But change started.

Vanessa repaid what she could.

Courtney sold several luxury purchases and returned the money.

Madison wrote Olivia a letter.

Not a text.

A letter.

I laughed because you were crying.

I don’t know why I thought that was okay.

Olivia read it twice.

Then put it away.

Months later, the sisters met at a coffee shop.

No Diane.

No Ethan.

Just them.

It was awkward.

Good.

Real repair often is.

Vanessa said:

“Mom always told me you looked down on us.”

Olivia shook her head.

“She told me you resented me.”

Courtney laughed bitterly.

“She kept all of us competing.”

Madison cried.

“What do we do now?”

Olivia looked at them.

“We stop using Mom as an excuse.”

That was the line.

Not forgiveness.

Responsibility.

At home, Ethan had his own work to do.

He changed jobs.

Not because software consulting was evil.

Because fourteen-hour days were a choice he had kept pretending were mandatory.

He took a role closer to home.

Less prestige.

Less money.

More life.

His old boss called it a step down.

Ethan looked at Samuel asleep on his chest.

“Feels up to me.”

Then Olivia walked in holding an envelope.

From Diane.

Prison mail.

Ethan asked:

“Want me to throw it away?”

Olivia shook her head.

“No.”

She opened it.

The first sentence said:

I still think you misunderstand me.

May you like

Olivia folded the letter.

Then put it in the trash.
