Chapter 18 - Olivia’s VoiceAt trial, Diane looked smaller.

Not harmless.

Smaller.

Olivia took the stand.

Her voice shook at first.

Then steadied.

She described the chores.

The insults.

The pills in the trash.

The money.

The forged signatures.

The videos.

The way Diane made her question whether exhaustion meant weakness.

Diane’s attorney asked:

“Did your mother ever tell you she loved you?”

“Yes.”

“Did she help you during pregnancy?”

“Sometimes.”

“Did she cook?”

“Yes.”

“Drive you to appointments?”

“Yes.”

“Then this wasn’t all abuse, was it?”

Olivia paused.

“No.”

The attorney looked satisfied.

Then Olivia continued.

“That’s why it took me so long to understand.”

The courtroom went quiet.

She looked at the jury.

“People think cruelty is obvious. Sometimes it brings soup first.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

That line stayed with him.

Vanessa testified next.

Then Courtney.

Then Madison.

Three daughters describing three versions of the same mother.

Generous.

Controlling.

Sacrificing.

Punishing.

Loving.

Dangerous.

All true at once.

The jury convicted Diane on the major fraud and exploitation counts.

Other charges were resolved separately.

She received prison time.

Restitution.

Protective orders.

At sentencing, Diane looked at Olivia.

“I did everything for this family.”

Olivia answered quietly:

“No, Mom.”

The judge looked up.

Olivia continued.

“You did everything to stay in charge of it.”

Diane cried.

Olivia did too.

Justice did not make them strangers.

It made the distance legal.
