Chapter 10 - HER VERSION OF THE TRUTH

Diane had reported me for theft.

She told the officer I had stolen “private family property” from her suitcase and was now attempting to access assets that belonged to the Whitmore family.

“Officer,” she said, “the safe-deposit box belongs to the late Michael Carter. My client is his surviving spouse and authorized representative. The key was voluntarily given to her by Michael’s brother.”

Diane’s eyes cut toward me.

“Evan gave you that?”

I said nothing.

For the first time since this began, she looked frightened.

The officer asked for identification and listened to both sides. No one was arrested. No one was dragged away. Real life was not that satisfying.

But before Diane left, she leaned close enough for only me to hear.

“You have no idea what Evan owes me.”

That sentence stayed with me.

By evening, Michael’s relatives were calling. Diane had told them I attacked her, poisoned the children against her, stole documents, and invented abuse to control Michael’s money.

I wanted to scream the truth at every one of them.

Maya stopped me.

“Save it for court.”

So I stayed quiet.

Then a video appeared online.

Diane had filmed herself sitting in her car outside my house, crying.

“My grandchildren are being kept from me,” she said. “I have serious concerns for their safety.”

She never mentioned the locked pantry.

She never mentioned the staged photographs.

The video spread through our local parent groups within hours.

That night, someone spray-painted LIAR across my garage door.

Noah saw it before I could cover it.

“Is Grandma going to make everyone hate us?” he asked.

I knelt beside him.

“No.”

I wish I had believed myself.

Because ten minutes later, my phone buzzed with a message from an unknown sender.

It contained one photograph.

May you like

Lily, asleep in her bedroom.

Taken from inside my house.
