Chapter 7 - THE MONEY

Michael’s life-insurance policy had paid just over 1.6 million dollars after his death.

Most of it had been placed in a protected trust for Lily and Noah. College. Medical care. Housing. Their future.

I could authorize expenses for the children, but I could not take the money for myself.

Neither could Diane.

Unless I was removed as trustee.

Maya brought in a forensic accountant named Daniel Cho, who spoke softly and asked very sharp questions.

“Has Diane ever had access to your banking passwords?”

“No.”

“Your mail?”

“She lived here. So yes.”

“Your husband’s old computer?”

I hesitated.

“Yes.”

We found it boxed in the garage.

Daniel recovered deleted files. One was not ordinary.

It was an application to open a new fiduciary account at a bank in another state.

Applicant: Diane Whitmore.

Beneficiaries: Lily Carter and Noah Carter.

Expected assets: $1,642,800.

The application had been created six weeks earlier.

“She planned the transfer before she filed anything,” Maya said.

Daniel kept searching.

Then he found payments from Diane’s personal checking account to a private consulting company called Hearthstone Family Advocacy.

Three payments.

Five thousand dollars each.

“What do they do?” I asked.

Maya searched the name.

Her face darkened.

“They prepare private custody evaluations and ‘family intervention strategies.’ Some legitimate. Some aggressive.”

The invoice descriptions were worse.

Evidence development.

Caregiver positioning.

Emergency guardianship preparation.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

A man spoke before I could say hello.

“Mrs. Carter, my name is Evan Whitmore.”

I stopped breathing.

Michael’s older brother had not spoken to me in nearly two years.

“I think you found my mother’s papers,” he said.

“How do you know?”

“Because she called me.”

His next words came quietly.

“And you need to understand something before you trust what’s in that folder.”

May you like

“What?”

“My mother didn’t plan this alone.”
