Chapter 12 - THE DEBT

Evan met us that evening in Maya’s office.
He looked sick.
“I lied to you,” he said before sitting down.
“I know.”
He nodded.
Then he told us the part Diane had been holding over him.
Evan’s construction company had failed the year before. He owed hundreds of thousands of dollars. Diane had paid some of his creditors and loaned him enough to avoid bankruptcy.
In return, he signed documents she described as “family planning paperwork.”
The papers tied him to the trust plan and to Hearthstone’s so-called evidence development.
“You signed this without reading it?” Maya asked.
“I was desperate.”
“That is not a defense.”
“I know.”
I stared at him.
“Did you know she was starving Lily?”
“No.”
“Did you know she was filming her?”
“I knew about videos. I thought she was recording real conversations.”
“Did you know she wanted me declared unfit?”
He looked at the floor.
“Yes.”
The word landed like a stone.
Evan opened his phone and gave Maya access to months of messages with Diane.
The messages showed Evan protesting as Diane escalated, while she reminded him that she had paid his debts.
Then came the message that changed the legal shape of everything.
Diane: Once Rachel is removed, I can borrow against future distributions through the fiduciary structure. We only need temporary control.
Maya read it twice.
“She wasn’t just trying to control the trust,” she said. “She was planning to leverage it.”
Evan nodded miserably.
“There’s more.”
He reached into his coat and placed a small digital recorder on the desk.
“My mother forgot this was still syncing to my old laptop.”
“What’s on it?” I asked.
May you like
Evan looked directly at me.
“A conversation with the woman she paid to make the first child-protection report.”
