Chapter 14 - BEFORE MICHAEL DIED

The folder contained twelve videos recorded by Michael during the final year of his life.

They were messages for me.

He sat in his home office wearing the gray sweater I had thrown away after he died because I could not bear the smell of him on it.

In the first recording, he spoke directly to the camera.

“Rachel, I’m making these because I keep thinking I’ll have time to explain everything later.”

I covered my mouth.

He said Diane had pressured him to leave me because she believed I had “taken” him from the family.

He told me he had quietly changed passwords, removed Diane from old accounts, and instructed his attorney not to share trust information with her.

Then he admitted the mistake that had haunted him.

“I should have told Rachel the full truth about my mother years ago. I kept thinking distance was enough.”

In the seventh video, he described a childhood punishment almost identical to what Lily had endured.

Food withheld for “disrespect.”

Meals turned into obedience tests.

A locked pantry.

I had to stop the video.

The next one was worse.

Michael said he had confronted Diane after finding an old brass pantry latch in her purse during a visit.

“She laughed and said it was from a cabinet project,” he said. “Maybe it was. But it took me straight back to being eight years old.”

Eight.

The final recording was made ten days before the car accident that killed him.

He looked exhausted.

“If I’m gone, do not let guilt turn my mother into a second parent. She will call it help. She will call it family. But Rachel, please trust your instincts before you trust her tears.”

I paused the video.

For two years, I had hated myself for not being more grateful to Diane.

Now I understood why accepting her help had always felt like surrendering something I could not name.

Then Michael leaned closer to the camera.

“There is one person who knows what happened to me as a child. If my mother ever goes too far, call him.”

He said a name I had never heard before.

Dr. Samuel Price.
