Chapter 16 - THE ARREST

Diane did not scream when they arrested her.

That would have been easier to watch.

Instead, she became very calm.

She handed over her handbag, turned around, and held out her wrists like someone accepting an award.

Then she looked at me.

“This is what you wanted.”

“No,” I said. “I wanted my children safe.”

For the first time, she had no answer.

Investigators alleged child endangerment, false reporting, forgery-related conduct, unlawful recording, and attempted financial fraud. Diane was no longer controlling the story alone.

Sandra admitted taking money, Evan gave a full statement, and investigators seized Hearthstone communications.

Then came another surprise.

Diane had done this before.

Not exactly this.

But close.

A former daughter-in-law of Evan’s contacted Maya after seeing news of the case. Years earlier, during Evan’s divorce, Diane had secretly documented the woman’s parenting, photographed messy rooms, saved private messages, and encouraged Evan to seek emergency custody.

Evan had refused.

Their marriage ended anyway.

“I should have recognized the pattern,” he told me.

“Yes,” I said.

He nodded.

He had stopped asking me to forgive him.

That made it easier to listen.

Three weeks after Diane’s arrest, Lily’s therapist suggested a family exercise. Each of us had to name one thing in the house that made us feel unsafe and decide what to do about it.

Noah chose the front door.

We added a camera and a new lock.

Lily chose the pantry.

So I took a screwdriver and removed the door completely.

She watched every hinge come off.

When it was done, the shelves stood open to the kitchen.

Lily touched the empty hinge marks.

“Can it stay like this forever?”

“Yes.”

That night, someone slipped an envelope through the mail slot.

There was no return address.

Inside was a single photograph of Michael as a child.

On the back, someone had written:

ASK DIANE WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS FATHER.
