Chapter 17 - THE OTHER SECRET

Michael’s father, Thomas Whitmore, had died when Michael was fourteen.

The story I knew was simple: heart attack, late at night, no warning.

Michael rarely spoke about him.

Diane always said grief had destroyed the family.

The photograph showed ten-year-old Michael beside Thomas in a fishing boat. A date was written on the back: May 18, 1998.

Maya tracked the photograph to Thomas’s younger sister, Judith, who had cut contact with Diane decades earlier.

Judith agreed to meet me.

“I sent the picture,” she said.

“Why now?”

“Because I saw Diane on television saying mothers must protect their children at any cost.”

Judith’s mouth tightened.

“She always loved that sentence.”

Judith said Thomas suffered his fatal heart attack during an argument with Diane after confronting her about Michael’s punishment.

“He wanted to leave and take the boys,” Judith said. “Diane told everyone Thomas was unstable. She had already been collecting stories about his drinking and temper.”

My skin prickled.

The same pattern.

“Was he abusive?”

“He drank too much near the end. He shouted. I won’t turn him into a saint. But he was trying to get Michael away from her.”

After Thomas died, Diane told Michael that his father had planned to abandon him.

Judith believed that lie kept Michael emotionally tied to his mother for years.

I sat in my car after the meeting and cried until I could barely see.

Michael had spent his whole life inside a story Diane wrote for him.

Then my phone rang.

It was the prosecutor’s office.

Diane wanted to negotiate.

Not about money.

Not about the guardianship petition.
