Chapter 13 - THE STORAGE UNIT

The five-million-dollar clause might not survive a fraud challenge.
But my real signature made the case messy.
That part was my fault.
I had signed without reading because trusting Vanessa was easier than paying attention.
Claire approached me before police took Vanessa away.
"She gave me something last week."
A small envelope.
Inside was a storage-unit key.
Vanessa had told Claire to keep it until after the honeymoon.
Police searched the unit with us.
Inside were copies of company records, my parents' property files, and a suitcase containing $280,000 in cash.
Then an officer lifted out a passport.
Vanessa's photograph.
Different last name.
Different birthday.
VANESSA KENT.
A second box contained a marriage certificate from nine years earlier.
Vanessa Kent and Michael Harrow.
The marriage had ended years ago.
But Michael's name mattered.
He once owned a construction company.
A company later purchased and dismantled by Northline Capital.
Dad stared at the documents.
"She knew exactly what Northline does."
Then police opened one final box.
It held surveillance photographs.
My office.
My parents' home.
My car.
Me at a coffee shop.
The earliest photograph was dated eighteen months ago.
Vanessa and I had met seventeen months ago.

The storage unit smelled like dust and cardboard. Nothing inside belonged to a wedding. It looked like an office built for dismantling a family: copies, backups, passwords, property maps, and timelines stacked in neat plastic bins.
She had been watching me before we ever spoke.
