Chapter 8 - MY PHONE

Security locked the doors.

My phone was missing.

I remembered leaving it in the bridal suite before the ceremony.

We found it upstairs beside a makeup bag.

The banking app was open.

The transfer had been created at 4:17 p.m.

At that exact time, I had been standing beneath the arbor.

Vanessa had been walking down the aisle.

So who touched my phone?

Claire whispered, "Grant."

She admitted seeing him enter through the service hall wearing a caterer's jacket.

Security footage confirmed it.

Grant entered the bridal corridor at 4:11.

He left at 4:22.

Dad called police.

Vanessa snapped, "You can't send people after him."

"I'm not," Dad said. "The police are."

Grant was stopped twenty miles away.

He had my banking token in his jacket.

And a second phone.

On it were messages from Vanessa.

AFTER CEREMONY HE CAN'T BACK OUT WITHOUT LOOKING CRAZY.

Another said:

IF CHARLES STARTS TALKING, CREATE A SCENE.

Then:

RUTH IS THE WEAK LINK.

Mom read the message without speaking.

I looked at Vanessa through the glass door.

"What does that mean?"

She whispered, "It means your mother signs things without reading."

Then Mom said something that made the room colder.

I checked the security image again. Grant walked through the hallway without looking lost, which meant he knew exactly where my phone would be. Somebody had given him that information before the ceremony began.

"Last month, Vanessa asked me what heart medication Charles takes."
