Chapter 7 - THE FAKE WILL

Claire admitted Vanessa had asked her to witness a document four months earlier.

"She said Charles already approved it."

Dad asked, "Whose signature did you witness?"

Claire started crying.

"Yours."

Vanessa shouted, "Stop talking."

Security stepped closer.

Claire found the document in her email.

The fake will left voting control of Walker Supply to me, then gave my future spouse authority if I became "emotionally compromised."

I stared at Vanessa.

"Who decides that?"

Margaret pointed to the evaluator.

Dr. Steven Carr.

Vanessa's therapist.

Dad said, "The same man who wrote that Ethan's family causes him chronic stress."

Claire whispered, "Vanessa said Ethan was too attached to his parents."

Vanessa turned on her.

"You traitor."

Then Dad's phone rang.

He listened.

His face hardened.

"What happened?" I asked.

"The bank just blocked a transfer."

"How much?"

"Nine hundred thousand dollars."

The transfer had been started three minutes earlier from my account.

The phrase "emotionally compromised" stayed in my head. Vanessa had seen me angry with Dad, frustrated with Mom, exhausted after work. Suddenly every vulnerable moment felt like something she might have been cataloging for later use.

From a phone still inside the wedding venue.
