Chapter 14 - VANESSA REED WASN'T HER FIRST NAME

The passport said:
VANESSA KENT.
It was expired but genuine.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Six years older in the photograph.
Police found two more IDs in the storage unit.
One was a driver's license under Vanessa Kent.
The other was a marriage certificate.
Vanessa Kent and Michael Harrow.
Married nine years ago.
No divorce decree in the box.
I felt the room tilt.
Dad grabbed my shoulder.
"Breathe."
I did.
Barely.
The police checked.
There had been a divorce.
Finalized seven years ago.
So she wasn't secretly married.
But Michael Harrow mattered for another reason.
He had owned a regional construction company.
A company sold to Northline Capital.
Two years after their divorce.
Dad whispered, "There it is."
Michael Harrow had lost nearly everything after the sale.
Northline stripped the assets.
His company collapsed.
Vanessa had seen the process up close.
She knew exactly how it worked.
So why repeat it with Walker?
Police contacted Michael.
He agreed to speak.
His first sentence was:
"Vanessa doesn't marry men. She marries systems."
I felt nauseated.
He described a woman who studied families.
Who learned who held money, who held grudges, who signed without reading.
He said she never stole directly.
She positioned herself where other people handed her authority.
"Did she do that to you?"
"She tried."
"What stopped her?"
"My sister."
"How?"
"She found the emails."
The emails involved a planned property transfer.
Almost identical to the fake power of attorney involving Mom.
I stared at Dad.
"This wasn't her first time."
"No."
Michael continued.
"She left when she realized I would never own enough of the company to be useful."
I asked the question I hated.
"Did she ever love you?"
A long pause.
"Probably, in whatever way she knows how."
That answer hurt.
Because I suspected it applied to me too.
Before we left the storage unit, an officer opened one final box.
Inside were photographs.
My house.
My office.
My parents.
Mom at the grocery store.
Dad leaving his cardiologist.
Me eating lunch with coworkers.
The surveillance dated back eighteen months.
May you like
Vanessa and I had met seventeen months ago.
She had been watching my family before she introduced herself to me.
