Chapter 9 - MY FATHER'S MEDICATION

Mom said Vanessa had asked about Dad's dosage, his doctor, even whether he kept emergency pills in his car.
Dad added, "She asked about my life insurance too."
I stared at both of them.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Dad's answer hurt.
"We did. You called every warning an attack on your relationship."
He was right.
I had defended Vanessa so hard that concern sounded like jealousy.
Then police showed us Grant's messages.
One from that morning:
RUTH IS THE WEAK LINK.
Another:
IF CHARLES MOVES FIRST, USE THE BRACELET.
I asked Vanessa what bracelet meant.
She looked away.
Before she could answer, an officer brought in another document from Grant's car.
A purchase agreement.
Walker Supply.
Buyer: Northline Capital Partners.
Price: sixty-two million dollars.
My signature appeared on the agreement.
Dad's did not.
Vanessa's would become necessary after the wedding under the fake control structure.
I looked at her.
"You were selling my family company?"
She said, "I was giving you a future."
Then Dad said, "Northline wasn't buying your future, Ethan."
He tapped the contract.

I thought about Mom asking me weeks earlier whether Vanessa respected boundaries. I had laughed and told her she worried too much. Now I could not remember a single warning I had listened to without first defending my bride.
"They were buying everything they planned to dismantle."
