Chapter 10 - THE BLUE BOX

My father lived ninety miles away and was still recovering from a stroke.
When he opened his door, the blue box was sitting on the dining table.
"Why didn't you call me?"
"Michael called first," Dad said. "He said Anna left private medical papers inside."
He had opened it anyway.
Inside were bank statements, handwritten notes, a flash drive, and three sealed envelopes.
One was for me.
I opened it.
Dan,
If you're reading this, then I was right to be afraid.
Mom thinks love gives her ownership. Michael thinks shame disappears if someone richer fixes it. Neither understands that Lily is not property.
My throat closed.
Collins examined the flash drive.
Anna had saved screenshots of Michael requesting money and Evelyn telling her not to "destroy the family over a temporary mistake."
Then we found a power-of-attorney form.
Anna's signature appeared at the bottom.
The date was six days after she had lost the physical ability to sign.
Witness: Michael.
Notary: Ross Keene.
Authority granted to Evelyn.
"They were trying to take control before Anna was gone," Dad whispered.
Then Collins opened an audio file.
Anna's tired voice said, "I said no."
Evelyn answered:
"Then don't be surprised when Daniel loses Lily after you're gone."
The recording ended.
Dad's phone rang.
Unknown number.
Collins answered.
A frightened woman's voice said:
"Tell Daniel the hospital wasn't the first time Evelyn tested Lily's allergy."
I felt every muscle in my body lock.
"Who is this?"
"Rosa Delgado. I used to work for Evelyn."
May you like
Then she whispered:
"She did it once when Lily was four."
