Chapter 15 - THE MAN IN THE KITCHEN

The luncheon venue had more cameras than Evelyn realized.

One service-hall camera captured Ross Keene entering the kitchen at 11:07 a.m. wearing a catering jacket.

He left twenty-two minutes later.

At 11:31, Lily ate the dessert.

Keene's cooperation deal changed instantly.

He admitted Evelyn planned a "controlled exposure."

"To peanuts?" Collins asked.

"She said a doctor would be present."

Dr. Voss had been scheduled to attend but canceled that morning.

Evelyn continued anyway.

Keene's job was to make sure my medication could not "rescue the narrative."

One trainer.

One delayed real injector.

But Michael panicked, and Evelyn removed the entire pouch.

"Why was Lily's school pen in her car?" Collins asked.

"Backup."

A backup not to protect Lily.

To control exactly when she would be saved.

Keene also explained the money.

Michael's original theft opened the door, but Evelyn expanded the scheme. Lily's trust paid the lawyers, investigators, and consultants building the case against me.

Once I lost custody, Evelyn expected to control companies billing the trust for years.

"How much?" Alvarez asked.

"At least one-point-two million."

I thought of Lily gasping, Dad, I can't breathe.

One-point-two million dollars.

Then Keene added:

"She believed Daniel's house could eventually become part of Lily's managed estate."

Anna's garden.

Lily's bedroom.

Our home.

Collins asked one last question.

"What if Lily had died?"

Keene stared at the table.

"Evelyn said the trust would become easier to control."

That answer changed the room.

And it changed the case.
