Chapter 7 - A DOCTOR WHO NEVER MET ME

Dr. Voss arrived with a lawyer and the expression of a man offended by accountability.
"I never evaluated Mr. Reed," he admitted.
"Then why sign an affidavit saying you did?" Collins asked.
"Evelyn Hart provided records."
"Records aren't an evaluation."
Voss looked at his lawyer.
"I was told the filing was preliminary."
"For what?"
"A guardianship petition."
"For a child with a living parent."
Collins slid Lily's smartwatch transcript across the table.
Once he loses custody, the trust will finally be under our control.
Voss read it.
His face changed.
"I wasn't told about a trust."
"Then what were you told?" I asked.
"That Lily was unsafe with you."
I leaned forward.
"My daughter nearly died yesterday because the woman who hired you fed her peanuts."
The lawyer tried to end the interview.
Voss stopped him.
"There was something else."
His attorney whispered, "Don't."
Voss ignored him.
"Six weeks ago, Evelyn asked whether an anaphylactic event could be documented as negligent supervision."
The room went still.
"Before the luncheon?" Collins asked.
"Yes."
"Did she ask about epinephrine?"
Voss nodded.
"She asked whether a delayed dose could support an emergency custody filing."
I stood so quickly my chair scraped backward.
Then a hospital security officer entered.
"We have someone using a stolen vendor badge to access pediatrics."
He showed us camera footage.
Baseball cap.
Mask.
Gray jacket.
But I knew the walk.
Michael.
May you like
He was inside the hospital.
And Lily was two floors above us.
