Chapter 16 - LILY'S VOICE

The emergency custody hearing came before the criminal trial.
Evelyn's lawyers tried to delay it.
The judge refused.
They suggested I was unstable from grief.
The judge had already seen the forged psychological report.
They claimed Lily's smartwatch recording had been coached.
Metadata ended that argument.
Then Lily asked to speak.
I said no at first.
Her therapist reminded me it was Lily's choice.
The judge interviewed her privately with a child advocate present.
I waited outside for twenty-three minutes.
When Lily came out, she took my hand.
"Did I do okay?"
"You told the truth. That's enough."
The judge ruled immediately.
Evelyn would have no contact with Lily.
No calls.
No letters.
No messages through relatives.
Michael's guardianship petition was dismissed.
At my request, the trust was moved temporarily to an independent professional fiduciary.
Later Lily asked:
"Did Grandma try to kill me?"
I sat beside her on the courthouse steps.
"I don't know what she told herself would happen."
"That's not the same answer."
"No."
I chose the truth she could carry.
"She knew you could get very sick. She did it anyway."
"Because of money?"
"Because she wanted control. Money was part of it."
Lily leaned against me.
"Mom would be mad."
"Your mom would be furious."
Detective Collins came through the courthouse doors.
She did not look relieved.
"What happened?"
"Forensics recovered a damaged section of Lily's watch audio."
On the recording, Lily began coughing.
Michael whispered, "Give him the pen."
Evelyn answered:
"Not yet."
Then came eight seconds of Lily struggling to breathe.
May you like
Eight deliberate seconds.
Enough to change every serious charge in the case.
