Chapter 13 - WHAT MICHAEL STOLE

Michael asked to see me.
He sat behind thick jail glass, looking younger than I remembered.
For a long time neither of us picked up the phone.
Then I did.
"Why did you take Anna's papers?"
His eyes dropped.
"Because she found the transfers."
"You stole from a dying woman's daughter."
"I told myself I'd replace it."
"But you didn't."
"No."
He swallowed.
"When Anna found out, she gave me twenty-four hours to tell you. Evelyn said she could fix it."
"By taking Lily?"
"At first it was signatures. Reports. Custody paperwork."
"And the luncheon?"
His face collapsed.
"That wasn't supposed to happen like that."
"You swapped my injector."
"Yes."
"Why ask whether doctors found the second one?"
"The trainer had my fingerprints inside the cap. I put it in your jacket."
Not manipulation.
Not confusion.
A choice.
I leaned closer to the glass.
"Did you help Evelyn hurt Anna?"
"No."
"What about the medication requests?"
"I never touched Anna's drugs."
He sounded terrified, but terror was no longer proof of innocence.
"Then who did?"
"Ross's office sent the refill forms. Evelyn used his fax account."
"Did Anna know?"
Michael nodded.
"She caught Evelyn trying to change things."
"What things?"
"Guardianship. Power of attorney. The trust."
Then he lowered his voice.
"Anna recorded one of their fights."
"We found it."
"Not that one."
My pulse jumped.
"Where?"
"In Keene's storage files."
"What does it say?"
May you like
Michael stared at me.
"Evelyn tells Anna exactly what she'll do to you after Anna dies."
