Chapter 18 - THE TRIAL

Evelyn went to trial.
The courtroom was packed the first week and half empty by the third. Public outrage burns hot and then finds something newer.
I stopped caring who watched.
Lily never entered the courtroom.
I testified.
Rosa testified.
Karen Dale testified.
Dr. Voss admitted he signed an evaluation without examining me.
Ross Keene testified under a cooperation agreement that would not keep him out of prison.
Michael testified last.
He looked at me only once.
The prosecutor walked him through every step.
The theft.
The forged documents.
The trainer injector.
The coat room.
The lie.
Then the prosecutor played Lily's voice.
"Dad, I can't breathe."
Michael bent forward and covered his face.
Evelyn did not.
She sat still.
When the prosecutor played the recovered eight seconds, several jurors looked directly at her.
The defense argued Evelyn never intended Lily to die.
The prosecutor answered with one sentence:
"Intent to control danger is not the same as absence of danger."
The jury convicted Evelyn on every major count presented, including fraud, conspiracy, evidence tampering, witness intimidation, theft, and felony child endangerment.
Michael pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud, theft, and related endangerment charges.
Keene was convicted separately.
After sentencing, Michael sent me a letter.
I placed it unopened in a drawer.
But another envelope waited for us at home.
Anna's letter to Lily.
On Lily's ninth birthday, she brought it to the kitchen table.
"Can we read it now?"
I broke the seal.

The first line said:
My sweet girl, if Dad is reading this with you, then he kept the promise I never had to ask him to make.
