Chapter 10 - The Price of Silence

Robert requested a meeting at a downtown restaurant with cameras over every table. He called it ā€œa chance to be reasonable.ā€ Priya attended with me. So did the restaurant manager when Robert demanded privacy.

Robert wore a navy suit and the same silver watch he'd tapped against the table while David held the belt.

ā€œI'll withdraw my complaint,ā€ he said, sliding a folder toward me. ā€œYour employer will receive a clarification. You sign this and walk away.ā€

The folder offered $250,000 in exchange for silence about the incident and any financial records connected to Haven House.

ā€œYou think the women at Juniper have a price tag?ā€ I asked.

ā€œEveryone has one.ā€

ā€œYou're asking me to lie.ā€

ā€œI'm offering you a future. My son could still have a marriage if you'd stop performing for an audience.ā€

ā€œYour son nearly hit me because you told him to.ā€

Robert's smile thinned. ā€œDavid is weak. You're making him weaker.ā€

Priya closed the folder. ā€œAny settlement can go through counsel. But my client will not agree to suppress information relevant to a public investigation.ā€

Robert stood. ā€œThen don't expect me to protect you when Thursday comes.ā€

ā€œFrom what?ā€ I asked.

ā€œFrom the truth people will think they saw.ā€

He left his untouched water behind.

Priya photographed the proposed agreement. Its final page identified the asset Robert wanted sold once Juniper was empty. The developer was a company called Blackwell Holdings, registered to a mailbox in another state.

I knew that name. It appeared on a bank transfer I'd reviewed six months earlier—long before I married David.

The money had come from Haven House.
