Chapter 18 - What David Finally Said

We sat in the courtyard with Keisha nearby. David left the envelope on the bench between us. He didn't try to sit close.

ā€œIt's the authorization log from our office server,ā€ he said. ā€œI requested it through counsel. It shows Dad used my account Saturday night.ā€

ā€œBecause you gave him the password.ā€

ā€œYes. I told the investigator that, too.ā€

He swallowed. ā€œI also told her I knew there was a camera at dinner. I agreed to provoke you. And when he put that belt in my hand, I made my own decision.ā€

ā€œWhy now?ā€

ā€œBecause watching those kids from across the street, I realized I'm still doing what Dad trained me to do: protect myself first.ā€

I wanted to believe him. I also remembered how his face looked when he raised his arm.

ā€œWhat happens to your mother?ā€ I asked.

ā€œHer attorney is reviewing the loan paperwork. If she signed something wrong, she'll have to answer for it. But she shouldn't have to lie for him anymore.ā€

ā€œAnd us?ā€

He looked down. ā€œI hope there's a way back.ā€

ā€œDavid, your apology doesn't create one.ā€

He nodded, tears spilling despite his effort to hold them back.

ā€œI know.ā€

The envelope also held emails between Robert and Blackwell's manager, discussing a redevelopment sale price and how to ā€œeliminate occupancy objections.ā€ They weren't rumors or screenshots from a stranger. They were authenticated records produced through the company's counsel.

Priya called after reviewing them with the investigator.

ā€œThis ties the money to the property plan,ā€ she said. ā€œBut the state's looking at something else, too.ā€

ā€œWhat?ā€

ā€œWhy Robert kept a list of people who complained. Including your mother.ā€
