Chapter 9 - The One Who Filmed

By Tuesday, Robert's edited video had a hundred thousand views. Strangers called me dangerous. A local radio host said I belonged in jail. None of them asked why David had a belt.
A young man approached me outside Priya's office. He was Owen Kincaid, Robert's nineteen-year-old nephew, and he looked as if speaking might cost him the last place he had to sleep.
āI work for Uncle Robert,ā he said. āAt the company warehouse.ā
āI know. Are you here for him?ā
āNo. That's the problem.ā
He showed me a message demanding that relatives sign a statement saying I'd attacked David without warning. Robert had offered to keep their jobs if they signed.
āDid you sign?ā I asked.
āNot yet.ā
Priya invited him inside. āIf you're telling the truth, we can document your account. But be careful about making copies of company records you don't have permission to take.ā
Owen nodded too fast. āI have my own video. I was filming Grandma's speech.ā
His clip began with a toast and ended with the belt striking the table. It caught my face after David raised his arm: astonishment first, then concentration. It also caught Robert giving David a tiny nod.
āI didn't realize what I had,ā Owen said, āuntil he told me to delete it.ā
āWhy didn't you?ā
āBecause I saw Aunt Helen crying. And nobody asked why.ā
For the first time, I wondered what Helen knew.

As Owen prepared to leave, his phone rang. The caller ID read UNCLE ROBERT. He let it go to voicemail. Seconds later, a text appeared:
**I know you're with Mara. Come home before I make you.**
