Chapter 19 - The Full Frame

Six weeks later, the county published its independent findings. The disputed invoices had padded Southgate's payments. Blackwell had received money while negotiating to buy the property, and resident information had been accessed outside approved procedures. The state announced an investigation into fraud, intimidation, and improper disclosure.

Robert was removed from the Haven House board. A judge barred him from controlling foundation records while the civil case proceeded. Criminal charges followed on several financial and witness-intimidation counts. His lawyer denied the allegations. The court, not the internet, would decide the case.

David cooperated with investigators. He was no longer chief financial officer. He also faced scrutiny for the access he approved and for his account of the dinner. For the first time in his life, he could not hand that responsibility back to his father.

ClearLedger reviewed the complete video, the officer's notes, and the evidence technician's report. The organization ended my suspension. I didn't celebrate. I'd missed a paycheck, lost sleep, and read threats sent by people who had never met me.

At Juniper House, the board canceled the unauthorized sale and appointed resident representatives to oversee its future. Keisha said Nora and Charlie were safe, though they had chosen to remain out of public view.

Aunt June brought homemade lemon bars to the first board meeting. Helen came too, without Robert. She spent most of the afternoon listening.

One evening I received an envelope from David. Inside was a signed acknowledgment that he would not contest a separation or ask me to keep quiet about what happened. There was no grand speech. Just a note.

**I love you. I am finally learning that love doesn't give me the right to ask you to stay.**

After reading it, I opened the appointment book I'd found among my mother's things. I wanted to see her handwriting again without Robert's name beside it. A small envelope slipped from the back cover, sealed and addressed to me. I had never seen it before. On the front she had written only: For the day you need courage.
