Chapter 12 - Before the Wedding

David agreed to meet in the public courtyard outside Priya's office. This time he brought his own documents. He looked frightened of them.
āDad hired someone to look into you,ā he admitted. āLast spring, after we got engaged.ā
āWhy?ā
āHe said you were digging through the foundation. He thought you wanted money.ā
āAnd you believed him?ā
āI wanted to believe you wouldn't hurt the family. I also wanted Dad to stop yelling at me.ā
I almost laughed. āYou could've asked me.ā
āI should have.ā
He opened a folder containing an email he had received Saturday night. Robert had asked him to bring Mara to Sunday dinner and āmake sure the camera sees the reaction.ā
āYou knew,ā I said.
āI knew about the camera. I didn't know he'd bring out a belt.ā
āBut when he did, you swung it.ā
David's eyes filled. āYes.ā
āSay the whole sentence.ā
He struggled to meet my gaze. āI chose to swing a belt at my wife. My dad told me to, and I did it.ā
That was better than an excuse. It still wasn't enough.
āI've arranged to stay with a friend,ā I told him. āDon't come there.ā
āWhat about us?ā
āI don't know if there is an us.ā
He nodded, accepting the answer without trying to bargain. Then he handed me the email printout and said, āMy account was used to download those addresses. I gave Dad the password because he said my mother could face fraud charges if a loan fell apart. I don't know whether he used it on Saturday, but I made it possible.ā
āTell the investigators. Not just me.ā
May you like
As he stood, he said one more thing.
āHe has a list of everyone who ever reported him. Mara, your mother's name is on it.ā
