Chapter 15 - The Thursday Room

By nine Thursday morning, Haven House had contacted every household through its established safety channels. No private addresses were included in the messages. Keisha arranged temporary places for anyone who wanted to leave before Friday.
The county grant board convened in a windowless meeting room above the library. Robert sat at the front with his lawyer. He looked relaxed enough to order coffee.
When my name was called, he stood. āBefore this woman speaks, you should know she's under investigation for assaulting my son.ā
He played the six-second clip. Several board members shifted in their seats.
Priya stood beside me. āWe have the unedited recording and independent evidence of its origin. The officer's report also documents the belt.ā
āEveryone edits something,ā Robert said.
āNot the same way,ā the board chair answered. āSit down.ā
I described the invoices without showing residents' identities. An independent auditor confirmed that Southgate billed for dozens of moves no one could verify. Priya submitted Blackwell's payment chain under seal.
Then Robert addressed me directly. āWhy are you so obsessed with one old building?ā
I looked at the people watching him: accountants, advocates, reporters, and a few residents who had chosen to appear.
āBecause I lived there when my mother needed a locked door between us and someone dangerous,ā I said. āI know the difference between moving people to safety and moving them out for profit.ā
Robert blinked. He hadn't known that part.
Helen rose from the back row. āI have something to say about my signatures.ā

For an instant, I thought she'd sit down again. Robert gave her the look he used on David.
Then she walked toward the microphone.
