Chapter 10 - THE FIRST TIME

The photograph showed Khloe asleep in her own bedroom.
The night she collapsed after drinking Isabella's tea.
Marcus stared at the image when Avery sent him a scan.
Recording.
Khloe was moved again, this time to a secured surgical wing with an officer outside the door.
Marcus returned to the hospital.
"I should have protected you."
Khloe looked at him for a long time.
"Then start now."
"No more family excuses."
"No more."
"No more telling me Isabella 'means well.'"
"Never again."
Khloe reached for his hand.
Then she said, "I remember something from that night."
"What?"
"When I was half asleep, I heard two voices."
"Isabella?"
"One was hers."
"And the other?"
"A man."
"Owen?"
"I don't know. He said, 'The dose was wrong.'"
Marcus went still.
"Then Isabella said, 'We have another chance at the hospital.'"
The hospital plan had begun before Khloe was admitted.
Afterward, he received confirmation that Thomas Reeve had arrived at the Lake Geneva house.
Owen's phone also pinged near the property.
Isabella remained at the hospital under police supervision, but she had not yet been charged.
Marcus went to confront her one last time.
"Do you remember Mom?" she asked.
"What does she have to do with this?"
"Everything."
Their mother had died when Marcus was eleven and Isabella was seventeen.
Isabella had become half sister, half parent.
"You think I wanted your money?" she said.
"You stole twelve million dollars."
"I moved it."
"You tried to hurt Khloe."
"I tried to protect what Dad promised me."
Marcus frowned.
"What promise?"
"The company."
"Dad left it to me."
"After changing his will."
"Why?"
Isabella smiled sadly.
"Because Khloe's father threatened him."
Marcus stared.
"Khloe's father never met Dad."
"That's what she told you."
Khloe's father, Samuel Grant, had died five years before Marcus met her.
Isabella leaned forward.
"Ask your wife why her father is listed as a witness on our father's final will."
May you like
Marcus looked through the glass toward Khloe's room.
And for the first time that day, Isabella smiled like she had won something.
