Chapter 7 - THE DOCTOR

Marcus hit the emergency stop on the IV pump before Wells could touch it again.
"Doctor, step away."
Wells raised both hands.
"This is a misunderstanding."
Marcus almost laughed.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
"There's a second port puncture."
"What did you put in there?"
"Nothing."
Marcus stepped forward.
Avery blocked him.
"Let us do this."
Khloe stared at the ceiling.
"I trusted him."
Marcus sat beside her.
"So did I."
"Stop saying that like it helps."
Trust had become an excuse.
"I'm scared."
Khloe's anger softened.
"So am I."
The baby's heartbeat filled the room.
Khloe started crying.
Then Avery came back.
"The IV sample contained a sedative."
Marcus looked at Wells through the glass.
"Enough to hurt her?"
"Enough to make her unconscious."
"Why?"
"We're working on that."
Vivian had been found.
She was hiding in a supply room two floors below.
When police brought her upstairs, Isabella saw her from the secured waiting area.
"Vivian!"
Avery placed her in an interview room.
Marcus watched from behind the glass.
"Did you steal the envelope?"
"Why?"
"My mom told me Khloe was trying to steal the company."
Marcus felt sick.
Avery continued. "Did you know about the insulin?"
Vivian looked up sharply.
"What insulin?"
"Your mother brought a syringe into Khloe's room."
"No. She said she was just scaring her."
Marcus stepped into the room.
"What did she tell you to do with the envelope?"
Vivian looked at him.
"Burn it."
"Did you?"
"No."
"Where is it?"
"In my locker at Hale Systems."
Marcus exhaled.
Avery asked, "Locker number?"
Vivian gave it.
"But don't go there."
"Why?"
"Because Mom called someone after I took it."
"Who?"
May you like
Vivian's voice dropped.
"Uncle Marcus, she said, 'If he finds the ledger, start the fire.'"
