Chapter 5 - THE SIGNATURE

Marcus photographed every page.

"Good forgery."

Khloe shook her head.

"It looks exactly like mine."

"That's what makes it forgery."

The hospital moved her to a secured maternity suite.

No visitors without Marcus or police approval.

Isabella was no longer allowed on the floor.

"You can't keep me from my family!"

Marcus walked toward her.

"Watch me."

"You think Khloe is innocent?"

"Innocent of what?"

Isabella smiled.

"Ask her why she met with Preston Vale."

Marcus frowned.

Preston Vale had been Hale Systems' former chief financial officer. Marcus fired him eighteen months earlier after discovering unauthorized vendor payments.

"Khloe never met Preston."

Isabella's smile widened.

"You sure?"

"Ms. Hale, you need to leave."

Isabella walked inside.

Before the doors closed, she said, "Check the parking garage cameras, Marcus."

Hospital security found footage from three weeks earlier.

Khloe entering the garage.

Preston Vale approaching her near the elevators.

Then Preston handed Khloe an envelope.

Marcus watched the clip three times.

When he returned to her room, Khloe could see the question on his face.

"What?"

"Did you meet Preston Vale?"

"Who told you?"

"Isabella."

Khloe closed her eyes.

"So you did."

"He found me."

"What did he give you?"

"A warning."

"About what?"

Khloe opened the bedside drawer.

"It was here."

"What was?"

"The envelope."

Marcus called security.

Then Khloe looked toward the camera.

"Play the recording from when I was downstairs."

At 9:03 that morning, before Isabella appeared with the syringe, a woman in scrubs entered Khloe's room.

Then she turned toward the camera.

Even under the surgical mask, Marcus recognized her eyes.

"That's not a nurse."

May you like

Khloe whispered, "Who is she?"

"Isabella's daughter."
