Chapter 12 - LOCKDOWN
The hospital went into lockdown.
Marcus grabbed Khloe's hand.
"You're not leaving this room."
"Neither are you."
Owen had entered using an employee credential that should have been deactivated.
Someone inside the hospital had restored it.
Dr. Wells was already in custody.
Vivian was with police.
Isabella was under guard.
Avery opened the door.
Marcus heard footsteps in the stairwell.
Avery ran after them.
"Stay here!"
Khloe reached for the call button.
Marcus grabbed a metal IV pole.
Not Owen.
It was Nurse Supervisor Elaine Burke.
"Elaine?"
"Don't hit me."
"Why are you here?"
"Because Owen is looking for Isabella."
Khloe stared.
"Why?"
Elaine swallowed.
"Because she has the original files."
Marcus felt cold.
"What original files?"
"The ones proving Owen planned the whole thing."
Elaine had worked with Owen for two years, helping him access patient systems in exchange for money. She claimed Isabella believed she was in control, but Owen had been manipulating her.
"He's been stealing from the foundation longer than she has," Elaine said.
"Why tell us now?"
"Because he said he's cleaning up everyone."
Khloe flinched.
Elaine whispered, "He's coming."
Marcus looked at the door.
Then Isabella's voice came over the hospital intercom.
"Marcus?"
"Marcus, if you can hear me, Owen has me."
Khloe's face changed.
Isabella continued, no longer proud, no longer controlled.
"He's taking me to the roof."
"Bring the ledger."
Marcus looked at Elaine.
"What ledger?"

Elaine pointed at Khloe.
"The one Isabella hid in your wife's room before you opened the door."
