Chapter 3 - THE SYRINGE

Marcus watched the clip twice.

Isabella walked into the room at 8:14, opened Khloe's IV cabinet, and removed something from her purse.

A syringe.

The camera angle did not show whether she injected anything.

Marcus looked at the technician.

"Keep going."

Isabella hid the syringe behind her back.

At 8:19, Isabella put the syringe into a sharps container.

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

"Can you recover it?"

"Security already sealed the container."

Hospital security had called police because tampering with an IV in a maternity unit was not something administrators handled quietly.

Avery watched the video without reacting.

Then he looked at Marcus.

"Your sister have medical training?"

"No."

"Access to this hospital?"

"She sits on the foundation board."

"That gives her donor access. Not medication access."

Marcus stared through the glass at Isabella.

She sat in a chair with her arms folded, looking offended instead of afraid.

Khloe was being examined in another room.

"Why would she do this?" Avery asked.

Marcus did not know how to answer.

Isabella loved control.

She had hated Khloe almost immediately.

"Last month."

Avery waited.

"Khloe fainted at home. We thought it was dehydration."

"Was Isabella there?"

Marcus looked at him.

"Yes."

A nurse came down the hall carrying an evidence bag.

Inside was the recovered syringe.

"We'll send this to the lab."

Isabella saw the bag through the glass.

"Marcus!"

"You don't know what you're doing."

"Then tell me."

"I was giving her vitamins."

Marcus stared.

"With a syringe?"

"Her doctor recommended supplements."

"Which doctor?"

Isabella hesitated.

Marcus turned to leave.

"Marcus, if you let them test that syringe, you're going to destroy this family."

"No, Isabella."

"If there's something in that syringe, you already did."

Then at Marcus.

"The lab ran a rapid test."

Marcus stopped.

May you like

"What was in it?"

"Insulin."
